Number typing practice
The longest reaches on the keyboard. Practise digits on their own, then inside the dates, prices and times you type every day.
About number row practice
On the number row the left hand types 1 to 5 and the right hand 6 to 0 (some courses give 6 to the left index finger; choose one and stay consistent). Each digit is two rows up from home, so the reach is long and accuracy usually drops at first.
If you enter lots of figures, such as accounts or data entry, the numeric keypad is faster; our Unit 7 lessons cover it.
Tips
- Reach from the home row and return; do not hover over the number row.
- Slow down slightly for numbers, then pick the pace back up.
- Check digits: a wrong digit is worse than a wrong letter because spell-check cannot catch it.
Number row practice FAQ
Which fingers type the numbers?
Left pinky 1, ring 2, middle 3, index 4 and 5; right index 6 and 7, middle 8, ring 9, pinky 0.
Should I use the number pad instead?
For long columns of figures, yes: the keypad puts all digits under one hand. For numbers inside normal text, the number row is quicker because your hands stay on the main keyboard.
