Symbol typing practice

Symbols are where most typists start looking at the keyboard again. Drill them alone, then inside the emails, prices and notes you type at work. Start typing below; no sign-up.

Quick answer: Most symbols sit on the number row and need Shift: hold Shift with the opposite hand's little finger, then reach up with the same finger that types the digit underneath (for example the left ring finger for @ on 2).

About symbols practice

On a US QWERTY keyboard the symbols ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) are the shifted number row, so each one is a long reach plus a Shift. Punctuation such as ; : ' " , . / ? sits under the right little and ring fingers.

The rule that keeps symbols accurate is the same as for capitals: press Shift with the hand that is not typing the key. For @ (left ring finger) hold the right Shift; for * (right middle finger) hold the left Shift.

Tips

  • Learn the digit under each symbol first; the finger is the same.
  • Use the opposite Shift every time, even when it feels slower.
  • Slow down for symbols and speed back up after them.

Symbols practice FAQ

Which finger types the @ symbol?

The left ring finger, which also types 2. Hold the right Shift key with your right little finger while you press it.

Why are symbols so hard to type?

They combine the longest reach on the keyboard (the number row) with a Shift key, and most people rarely practise them. Short daily drills fix that within a couple of weeks.
