1-minute typing test
Common English words, no punctuation, one attempt. Finish to see your speed, a recommended starting lesson and a printable certificate.
What your result means
For adults, 40 WPM is a solid everyday speed and a common requirement for office roles; 60+ is fast; 80+ is professional territory. Accuracy matters as much: at 95% accuracy, one keystroke in twenty needs fixing. See the full breakdown and a speed chart on the average typing speed page.
Typing test FAQ
How is the 1-minute typing test scored?
Net WPM counts only correctly typed characters, divided by five (the standard length of a "word") and by the minutes elapsed. Raw WPM counts every character you typed. Accuracy is correct keystrokes as a share of all keystrokes.
Is the typing certificate official?
No. It is a free, printable record of a result you achieved on this site, useful for motivation or a classroom wall. Employers who need proof of speed usually run their own supervised test.
Why do my results vary between tests?
Different word sets, fatigue and warm-up all move the number by a few WPM. Take the average of three tests for a fair picture of your speed.
Should I take a longer test?
A 1-minute test is quick and good for tracking progress. Two and three minute tests are closer to real typing because they include some fatigue and more varied words.
