About bottom row practice

Fingers curl down and slightly right: D to C, K to the comma, F to V and B, J to M and N, S to X, L to the full stop, and the pinkies to Z and the slash.

The bottom row is the least used of the three letter rows, but it holds N, M, C and B, which appear in a great many words. Weak bottom-row keys are one of the most common reasons for typing plateaus.

Tips

  • Curl the finger instead of moving the whole hand.
  • B belongs to the left index finger; do not reach across with the right.
  • Keep your thumb on the space bar as an anchor.
  • Return to the home row after every bottom-row key.

Bottom row practice FAQ

Which finger types each bottom row key?

Left: pinky Z, ring X, middle C, index V and B. Right: index N and M, middle comma, ring full stop, pinky slash.

Why do I keep missing B and N?

They are the longest index-finger reaches on the row and sit right in the middle, so it is tempting to use the wrong hand. Drill them slowly with the correct finger until it feels natural.
