Proper Posture & Setup

Sitting Position

Sit up straight with your back supported. Keep your feet flat on the floor.

Screen Distance

Position your monitor 20-26 inches away from your eyes, with the top at or slightly below eye level.

Keyboard Placement

Keep your keyboard directly in front of you with a slight negative tilt. Elbows at a 90-degree angle.

Wrist Position

Keep wrists straight and floating above the keyboard. Avoid resting your wrists while typing.

Proper Finger Placement

Home Row Position

Place left fingers on A, S, D, F and right fingers on J, K, L, ;. Thumbs rest on the spacebar.

Feel the Bumps

The F and J keys have small bumps to help you find the home position without looking.

Finger Assignments

Each finger is responsible for specific keys. Never use the wrong finger - this builds bad habits!

Return to Home

Always return your fingers to the home row after typing each key.

Building Speed

Accuracy First

Focus on typing accurately before trying to type fast. Speed will naturally increase with practice.

Don't Look Down

Resist the urge to look at the keyboard. Trust your muscle memory.

Practice Daily

Consistent practice (15-30 minutes daily) is more effective than long, infrequent sessions.

Use All Fingers

Develop equal skill with all fingers. Don't favor your stronger hand.

Type in Rhythm

Develop a steady, consistent pace rather than bursts of speed.

Improving Accuracy

Slow Down

If your accuracy drops below 95%, slow down until you can type accurately.

Fix Mistakes Immediately

When you notice a pattern of mistakes on certain keys, practice those keys specifically.

Read Ahead

Look 2-3 words ahead of what you're typing to anticipate upcoming keys.

Take Breaks

Fatigue leads to mistakes. Take a 5-minute break every 30 minutes.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Looking at the Keyboard

Looking down while typing slows you down and prevents muscle memory formation.

Using Few Fingers

Using only 2-4 fingers instead of all 10 limits your speed potential.

Poor Wrist Position

Resting wrists on the desk or keyboard causes strain and slows typing.

Bad Posture

Slouching affects your typing accuracy and can lead to discomfort.

Speed Over Accuracy

Prioritizing speed over accuracy in early learning creates bad habits.

Effective Practice Strategies

Start with Basics

Master the home row before moving to other keys.

Progressive Learning

Add one new row at a time, gradually building your skill.

Practice Weak Keys

Use TypeMaster Academy's weak key trainer to focus on your problem areas.

Real-World Practice

Once comfortable, practice by typing emails, documents, or stories.

Set Goals

Aim for specific WPM and accuracy targets for each practice session.

Track Progress

Use your dashboard to monitor improvement over time.

Equipment Recommendations

Keyboard Type

Use a full-size keyboard with tactile feedback. Mechanical keyboards can help with accuracy.

Key Resistance

Choose a keyboard with medium key resistance - not too stiff, not too soft.

Wrist Rest

Use a wrist rest for breaks, but not while actively typing.

Lighting

Ensure good ambient lighting to reduce eye strain.
